On May 25th, 1963, Thirty-One (31) African leaders convened a summit meeting to find the Organization of African Unity (OAU). They renamed Africa Freedom Day "African Liberation Day" and changed its date to May 25th, and this day has helped raise social and political awareness in African communities worldwide. It has also been a source of information about the struggles for liberation and development. The day's purpose was to mark the liberation movement's progress annually and to symbolize the people of Africa's determination to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.
