The safety of our students and pedestrians just took a monumental step forward with the passage of ACT 8952: The School Speed Zone and Enforcement Act

This groundbreaking legislation, which I sponsored, underscores our commitment to ensuring that school zones across the Virgin Islands are safer for everyone.ACT 8952 establishes designated school speed zones with reduced speed limits, proper signage, and active enforcement during critical times when children are present. The law also includes significant measures such as public education campaigns, enhanced safety infrastructure, and increased penalties for speeding violations in these zones. This Act is more than just legislation—it is a promise to our children and their families that their safety is a priority. With $500,000 allocated for implementing signage and public education, we are laying the groundwork for a future where accidents in school zones become a rarity.Through collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Public Works, and the Virgin Islands Police Department, we are creating a framework that prioritizes safety, accountability, and awareness. This is not just a victory for our schools but a leap forward for our community's shared responsibility to protect our most vulnerable.Let us all do our part by adhering to these new speed limits and raising awareness about the importance of school zone safety. Together, we can create a safer, more mindful Virgin Islands.“The safety of our children is not optional—it is essential. Let’s protect their future, one school zone at a time.”
